Before You Go: A Thoughtful Home Checklist for Your Holiday

Getting ready for a holiday should feel exciting, but the final hours at home can become a blur of last-minute jobs. A little preparation makes leaving easier and coming back more comfortable.
Here are seven small ideas to try, taking only what works for your home and your routine.
1. Start with a list you can actually finish
The day before a trip is rarely the moment for a full house clean. Choose the things that will matter when you get back: a clear kitchen counter, an emptied bin, clean dishes and somewhere easy to drop your bags. A short, realistic list is much more useful than an ambitious one.
2. Check the kitchen before you leave
Use up or freeze food that will spoil, wipe up spills and take out the rubbish. Check that taps are off and that small appliances are switched off where appropriate. You do not need to empty every cupboard — just make sure nothing unpleasant is waiting for you when you return.
3. Give the house a quick safety check
Close and lock windows and doors, check your usual home security arrangements, and make sure alarms are working. If you are considering turning off water or heating, follow the guidance for your home, season and appliances rather than making changes that could cause damage.
4. Plan for parcels, plants and pets
If someone is visiting while you are away, leave clear instructions for deliveries, plant care and pet routines. Include the vet’s number, food quantities and any medication instructions for your pet, along with your preferred contact details. Avoid sharing alarm codes or passwords more widely than necessary.
5. Make it easy for someone to help
A house sitter or trusted neighbour might need to know the bin collection day, where cleaning supplies are, and what to do if something leaks. A short, practical handover is kinder than leaving them to guess. Keep confidential details in a separate secure place.

6. Prepare for your return
Fresh bedding, a tidy entrance and a simple meal in the freezer can make that first evening back noticeably easier. Leave yourself one small treat, too — even if it is just your favourite tea waiting in the cupboard.
7. The ten-minute final walk-through
Before you go, take one calm circuit of the house. Look at windows, taps, appliances, bins, pet arrangements and anything else specific to your home. Then you can close the door knowing you have done the sensible things, without repeatedly second-guessing yourself.
Keep the little things simple
There is no need to do everything at once. Choose one idea to start with, make it part of your routine and build from there. A home that supports your day-to-day life is worth far more than a home that looks perfect for a photograph.
